Epic Games reveals Unreal Engine 5 running on PlayStation 5

Dang! Unreal Engine 5 has just been unveiled Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, the original creator of Unreal Engine in 1995. Heres what we know.

Audio System

The Audio System in Unreal Engine has been giving a lot of love. Using Convolution Revere to measure reverberation characteristics of real spaces (they used real caves) and reproduced them in virtual environments.

From this we’re getting incredible sound that we’ve never heard in games before.

Lumen

Lumen is a comprehensively dynamic global lighting system which adjusts to scenes and changes in light. The system provides diffusion of inter-reflection with countless bounces and oblique specular reflections.

It means that it can provide incredibly intricate details of environments ranging from millimeters to kilometers. This will allow game developers to make more dynamic scenes, and really prevent restrictions on creative flow.

Nanite

The next incredible enhancements come with Nanite focuses on providing better geometric details. This new technology means that high quality sources comprised of billions on billions of polygons can be transferred directly to the Unreal Engine.

Nanite geometric technology can be scaled in real time which cuts back on polygon budgets without compromising the image and video quality.

It’s incredible!

One of goals set out by Unreal is to achieve photorealism on par with movie CG and real life, and put it within reach of development teams of all sizes through highly productive tools and content libraries.

Unreal Engine 5 will be available for preview in early 2021, and in full release late in 2021, supporting next-generation consoles, current-generation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.

Watch the demo below.

Can you imagine what it would look like if used to revive old games? What do you think? Let us know on Twitter or Facebook!
