Everything we know about Sony’s PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 Logo

The Sony PlayStation 5 event starts in a little over 12 hours. As it draws closer, here is everything you need to know.

The Incredible Specs

Sony has already told us that the PS5 will support 8K graphics, 3D audio technology, ray tracing – something that has never been seen on a gaming console, and incredibly fast SSDs which will cut down on load times a lot – we’re talking 5.5GB/s (Raw), Typical 8-9GB/s (Compressed) compared to the PS4’s 50-100MB/s (which was dependent on data location on HDD).

This will be backed by an eight-core CPU (based on AMD’s new Zen 2 architecture) and an entirely custom made GPU based on AMD’s Radeon Navi hardware.

The Controller

Sony has innovated again with their controller. Breaking their usual standard, the controlled is called DualSense. They have changed the look and feel quite a lot, but although the change in angles is exciting it does some incredible differences.

We’re not only talking about their change to USB-C by the way (farewell, Micro-USB). This is way more exciting.

Adaptive triggers in the L2 and R2 buttons will offer levels of resistance while gaming. This should give a really different feel when pulling say, a bowstring before you release for an arrow, to say the feeling of a machine gun trigger.

Interestingly, the ‘Create’ button will replace the ‘Share’ button, and the previous round PS4 logo button is now just the logo itself – not more round button.

Along with this, there is a new built-in microphone array (but you can still plugin in your own microphone)

Backwards Compatibility

Like the PS4, you will be able to enjoy your old games on the PS5. It’s not clear yet if this includes PS1, PS2, and PS3 games. But you’ll still be able to play the entire previous generation!

The Reveal Time

Sony’s PS5 showcase is Friday, June 12 at 6 AM AEST, or Thursday, June 11 at 1 PM PDT for those on the other side of the world!
